ORCHAReD - Now in Beta

Pick. Learn. Grow.

The first AI-powered assessment tool built on our Five-Stage framework for authentic assessments. Students respond to authentic challenges, ORCHAReD assesses their work, and provides teachers with authentic feedback for students while helping them improve their assessment design — all in one place. ORCHAReD manages authentic formative assessment at scale for teachers, providing personalized, actionable feedback to improve student outcomes.

PICK the authentic formative assessment you want to use! Upload student work to ORCHAReD in PDF or images including graphic organizers, charts, or visual artifacts.

LEARN what your students are learning! ORCHAReD reviews student work against your standards and recommends other standards to consider, actionable feedback for learners, and where in the Five Stages of Assessment student struggled so that you can improve your assessment design in the future.

GROW as an educator. ORCHAReD provides individual, categorical, and whole class analyses in order to inform instruction and improve your assessment design. In about 20 minutes per class task, you get job-embedded data-driven insights on your learners and your teaching.

It’s not your fault!

Curricula and pacing guides keep teachers on the move. With at best 45 minutes of prep time each day, it’s not possible to spend the time necessary to provide professional and actionable feeback on student work in authentic projects. Until ORCHAReD, technology has only made this worse. Students have had the upper hand for years, using technologically enhanced tools to rise to the challenges you present. You need a technology that meets your demands.

Learners need you, not an avatar!

Computers can tell whether learners get answers right or wrong, and they’re getting better at telling them how they’re doing on open-ended challenges. But research is clear: leanrers need you to tell them how they’re doing. Your feedback affects their self-esteem and standing among their peers. The fact that you don’t have the time to do so is a structural problem, not a personal failing. ORCHAReD keeps the teacher in the assessment and feedback loop by enhancing teacher capacity.

You need ORCHAReD!

We’re teachers. We know. We’re building ORCHAReD to solve this specific problem. We know authentic projects and authentic assessment take time you don’t have, but we also know that most teachers would prefer if they could teach this way. With ORCHAReD, now you can!

Three Steps, One Integrated Learning Ecosystem

ORCHAReD is not a grading tool, though it’s a tool that can help you do that. ‍Instead, it goes beyond grading to embrace what Lorna Earl called an “assessment-as-learning” system. Most assessments are treated as one-and-done feedback. ORCHAReD assumes that learners working on authentic challenges learn as much from ongoing assessments as they do from direct instruction. But it only works if you have time to assess what they’re learning, and where they’re breaking down. Both of these are critical to forming effective relationships between teachers and learners.

5:1 That’s the typical ratio between class time and assessment time when working with authentic assessments.

Once‍ ‍That’s how often students receive detailed actionable feedback on authentic work from a live human being in a project, and usually not until the end.

Zero‍ ‍That’s how much extra time you have to provide what your learners, and you, need to excel.

01
Teachers Set up the Assessment

Teachers select the authentic formative assessment they’re using and tell ORCHAReD which standards they want to address. ORCHAReD can work with district specific content standards, national standards frameworks, and social end emotional standards. Learners submit their work as PDF reports, charts, graphs, mind-maps, or visual artifacts.

02
ORCHAReD Evaluates & RESPONDS

ORCHAReD randomly assigns numbers to each learner, then evaluates their submissions directly in terms of target standards. No summaries. No meta-data, but the actual student work. It then generates individualized actionable feedback the teacher can share for EACH learner, and then uses the Five Stages to evaluate where learners began to struggle with the assessment.

03
TEACHERS RECEIVE CLASS & INDIVIDUAL RESULTS

ORCHAReD analyzes patterns across the entire class in categories of Approaching Standard, At Standard, and Exceeding Standard. It identifies which standards students tend to be struggling with, and whether the assessment itself might be creating some of the confusion. Where this occurs, ORCHAReD suggests interventions for learners and teachers to ensure progress.
